Port Jeff, Stonington & Home

5/28/22

After a great dinner and peaceful night at the Port Jefferson Yacht Club, we said goodbye to the crew from Pronto, refueled at $7.04 per gallon and set a slow course for Stonington Connecticut (fuel consumption is dramatically reduced at lower speeds and the price of diesel has doubled since we started this trip).

Last sunset in Stonington

With a mostly favorable current, we made it to Stonington around 5 pm and picked up a mooring at Dodsons Marina. We intended to leave early on Friday and complete the last 55 miles for a mid afternoon arrival back in Bullock Cove. However, we woke up to thick fog and delayed our departure to 11 am (when we could at least see across the harbor).

Fishers Island Sound was bumpy in confused seas and Rhode Island Sound presented us with waves from the side that created an uncomfortable ride all the way to Point Judith. No matter, we were almost home it was almost Memorial Day Weekend and we were looking forward to reconnecting with family & friends.

Turning the corner at Point Judith put the waves & current on our stern as we slid north through Narragansett Bay, reminiscing about our departure last October. We blew our horn entering Bullock Cove and arriving at our slip in Cove Haven Marina, we were greeted by Holly & Brett, Kris Duarte & Fred Bieberbach. Holly and Brett unpacked the 5 months of clothes and stuff into our car, making it a much easier to face all the unpacking ahead.

Back in the Hood – YAY

Hugs, handshakes and celebratory champagne marked the occasion as we started our transition back to a land based life (or returning to our dirt home as our looper friends refer to the real estate that they left behind).

After 5 months aboard, 3700 statute miles, 70 ports, 428 hours of motoring, about 1500 gallons of diesel, and memories that will last a lifetime, we are looking forward to both the transition to land and future journeys by sea.
