Having lost a day due to weather, with booked flights home from Hilton Head, we are now traveling to a schedule. This meant a one night stay in Daytona, which we made the most of of by celebrating Kathys birthday at Mama Foo Foos, an eclectic and recommended restaurant on the property Halifax Harbor Municipal Marina.
The storm ushered in new weather – in the low 40s overnight and back to sweatshirts, pants, socks and coats. The humidity was gone but so was the warming sun. Luckily…just for a day or so.
Note to vicarious voyagers: we have zeroed in on city operated municipal marina because they are less expensive (by half) and tend to be more interesting than privately owned properties. Munis are staffed with city employees and provide a home port for many live a-boards, who wander the docks offering free advice and opinions. They are also popular with transients couples who, like us, have spent several days only talking to each other and share an eagerness to diversify the conversation. Inevitably, the men crawl into engine compartments and talk boats while the women discuss…women stuff?
Pulling into the marina in mid afternoon we decided to take on fuel before the price gets any higher (ouch!) The price has risen by 50% since we started this trip. We were greeted by 2 dockhands with a well rehearsed comedy routine that kept us laughing until we were secured for the night.
The early arrival allowed for a fresh water boat rinse and walk around the small downtown area. Not much activity on a Sunday night but a good chance to stretch our legs.
When you leave a marina, the key card (used for dock gates, bathrooms, laundry, etc) needs to be returned and this is handled in different ways. But Halifax Harbor Marina is creative. You pass the fuel dock slowly and one of our funny dock hands reaches out with a net on a long pole – you just drop the cards in and keep on going!! Hysterical and worked easily!
Next stop St Augustine.
