A Cove to Ourselves

2/25/22

We left Matheson Hammock and headed across Biscayne Bay, bound for Pumpkin Key in Card Sound. Biscayne Bay is shallow and our fathometer never went over 10 feet while we spent most of the trek in 6 to 8 feet of water (SkipStone needs 4 1/2 feet). I spent most of the time looking at the sky, the horizon, passing boats & shoreline. Looking down, over the side, through clear water, at the bottom of the bay rushing less than 2 feet under our keel was cause for some anxiety. Some things are best left ignored.

Pumpkin Key is a small island in Card Sound, off the west coast of Key Largo. It is surrounded by places to anchor but the wind direction would have meant anchoring directly in front of some sizable Key Largo homes and we opted for a more secluded spot, so we travelled a little farther down Card Sound and anchored in the lee of Wednesday Point (being Wednesday, it seemed appropriate). For 2 days and 2 nights we had the place to ourselves.

Pumpkin Key to the left…Key Largo to the right!
Swimming off the boat
Just us and the sunset
Cocktails on the Lido deck
The sun goes down as easy as the wine
Plotting a course to the Olive Islands (through the Straits of Pimento)

Next stop…civilization and Key Largo…

  1. Just catching up on your adventure. So jealous, sounds like a wonderful trip & the weather is clearly more favorable than what we’re having. Although it’s beautiful & sunny today, but very cold. Going to Newport this evening to see the Oscar nominated shorts at Jane Pickens.
Have fun & keep your postings coming. XOXO

    1. Hi Deb,
Thanks for the comment. How were the shorts at Jane Pickens? Great thing to do. Yup, weather is really nice and just so pretty in the open waters. Looking forward to getting together in May!

    1. Yes, that will happens with so many days at sea! But -for sure – there are times that we feel differently!! All the motion, fresh air and good sleep are wonderful. thank yo, Lis.

  2. Greetings from a wet & windy Swansea (UK). Iv’e read the fishing is good in the Florida Keys – have you tried casting a line overboard?
After all, I did show you how to catch fish (between beer’s) when I was last boating with you. Enjoy freshly caught fish for dinner tonight.
    Cheers. M,W & D.

    1. Mike, thanks for the fond memory of our fishing/sailing/beer drinking excursion. While we have seen fish jumping out of the water here, our most successful lure has been a blue credit card with a silver chip, which always brings a fresh fish to the table…on a plate.😃
